Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Our family is the first place we begin learning what the world is.

Before we understand language, identity, relationships or even ourselves, we're already absorbing messages about safety, love, fear, belonging and what life is supposed to look like.

But how much of what we carry into adulthood actually belongs to us?

In Episode 4 of Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father, Dan and Carlos explore family — the good, the bad and the ugly.

They discuss how parents and caregivers shape the earliest version of our identity, how fear and unresolved pain can move from one generation to another, why children often become mirrors for their parents, and what it means to eventually push against the family “mold” and become your own person.

Carlos also shares his experience of reconnecting with his family after years in the streets and prison and discovering that setting boundaries did not mean loving them any less. In some cases, those boundaries actually made the relationships healthier.

The conversation explores:

• What makes a family?

• How much of our identity begins in childhood?

• What parents unknowingly pass to the next generation

• Generational trauma and inherited patterns

• Why children can become our greatest teachers

• Whether parents are automatically right

• Rebellion and becoming your own person

• Healthy parenting and independence

• Social media, technology and modern family life

• Setting boundaries with parents and relatives

• Why family knows exactly how to trigger us

• Unconditional love between parents and children

• Whether a child's struggles represent a parent's failure

• What we want the next generation to inherit

• Whether we owe anything to our family

• Blended and adoptive families

• Resentment, blame and forgiveness

• Breaking generational patterns

• How changing yourself can change the family around you

At the center of the conversation is a difficult but hopeful idea:

We may not get to choose the family system that first shapes us, but as we grow, we can begin deciding what we want to carry forward.

This is Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father — a series built around the questions about life, meaning, relationships, fear, family, purpose and the human experience that so many of us never had the opportunity to ask.

If there is a conversation you wish you could have had with your father, leave the question in the comments. It may become a future episode.

And here's a question for this episode:

What is one belief, behavior or pattern you inherited from your family that you've had to question for yourself?
