Frank begins at the beginning: a Norman lord named Roger of Montgomery, who chose this promontory in 1073 because the land already did most of the defending for him. From those earliest earthen ramparts, through the turbulent hands of Arnulf de Montgomery and the steady command of castellan Gerald de Windsor, Pembroke gradually became one of the most strategically important fortresses in Britain.
But the castle's defining chapter belongs to William Marshal — knight, statesman, and one of the most remarkable men of the twelfth century. When he married Isabel de Clare in 1189 and received Pembroke as part of her inheritance, he set about rebuilding it entirely in stone. The great round keep he raised still stands today: twenty-three metres tall, with walls six metres thick at the base, crowned by an unusual domed roof.
Below all of it, deeper than the foundations, lies a natural cave where people sheltered at the end of the last ice age. Pembroke Castle sits on top of human history, layer by quiet layer.
This is a slow, unhurried story told in a calm voice, designed to help you relax and drift gently into sleep. A calming episode to help you relax and fall asleep.
