Tonight, Frank traces the long, patient story of the Corinth Canal — one of the most quietly extraordinary engineering journeys in human history. For more than two and a half thousand years, people looked at the Isthmus of Corinth and imagined cutting through it. Emperors commissioned surveys. Rulers built workarounds. Philosophers issued warnings. And yet the canal was not completed until 1893.

In this gentle sleep story, Frank begins at the beginning — with Periander, ruler of Corinth in the seventh century BCE, who considered a canal and instead built the Diolkos, a paved stone trackway along which ships were hauled overland on rollers. Fragments of that same trackway still lie in the ground beside the modern canal today.

From there, the story moves slowly through the centuries: Demetrius Poliorcetes and his surveyors who feared the two seas were at different heights, Julius Caesar who thought about it and was killed, Caligula who commissioned a survey and was also killed, and finally Nero — who actually picked up a pickaxe and struck the earth in 67 CE, setting six thousand prisoners to work before the project, like all the others, was abandoned.

The canal that stands today runs 6.4 kilometres through pale limestone walls that rise nearly ninety metres on either side. Frank tells its story slowly, softly, and without hurry — the way old things deserve to be told. Let the quiet history of this narrow strip of Greek rock carry you gently to sleep. A calming episode to help you relax and fall asleep.
