A 35-year-old con artist named Daejon allegedly swindled 26 women out of $1.3 million using a fake NFL player persona paired with a romance-investment scam. The scheme echoes real-life incidents like Robert Horry’s early NBA days, when he encountered a man posing as a teammate—complete with a Mercedes and towering height—to exploit the allure of athlete status. This isn’t new: even LeBron James’ image was weaponized online in 2022 to dupe fans. Athletes’ fame and fortune make them prime targets for imitation—and fraudsters are willing to go to extreme lengths to ride that coattail.
