  • How To Turn Passive Lessons Into Active, Vibrant Learning
    2026/09/16

If your students can repeat your notes today but forget them next week, the problem might not be your content, it might be the learning experience. We talk through the difference between passive learning and active learning (sometimes called vibrant learning), and why even small shifts toward student interaction can dramatically improve retention, motivation, and classroom energy. I share how active learning puts students in the driver’s seat while we still guide the route, and why that balance often creates stronger understanding and better behavior without constant teacher “performing.”

You’ll hear practical, teacher-friendly strategies you can use immediately, even if your lesson must include lecture. We break down simple engagement moves like Think Pair Share and a 3-2-1 reflection that helps students ask questions, name insights, and connect new ideas to prior learning. We also explore station-based learning as a higher-impact option, including the key design rule that makes stations truly active: students must do something with the content through reflection, analysis, evaluation, or creation.

To make redesign easier, we share two planning pathways: using Bloom’s taxonomy to target the level of thinking you want, or a simplified TMO framework focused on Thinking, Meaning, or Ownership. We walk through concrete examples, from turning a science lab demo into a problem-solving challenge to transforming persuasive writing into community-focused work that builds pride and purpose. We also outline a clear project-based learning process with checkpoints and roles, so ownership doesn’t turn into chaos.

If you’re looking for active learning strategies, student engagement ideas, and instructional design tools that fit real classrooms, hit play, subscribe, and share this with a teacher who needs a fresh spark. Then leave a review and tell us: what lesson will you turn from passive to active next?

  • What If Bloom’s Taxonomy Was Built For You
    2026/08/21

Bloom’s Taxonomy is everywhere in teacher training and instructional design, but most of us use it like a generic checklist. We wanted something better: a version that actually sounds like our discipline, reflects our students, and makes learning objectives and assessments line up without guesswork.

In addition to listening to this podcast episode, get a FREE Google Doc guide (and Canva Template) to build your own (Click Here!).

We start by going back to the basics and doing a quick audit of our current course materials. Which levels of thinking show up in our quizzes, discussions, labs, projects, and tests, and where are the gaps? From there, we define the teaching context we want the taxonomy to serve, whether that’s a first-year course, a graduate seminar, an online class, or a practicum. We also talk about how institutional priorities like critical thinking, civic engagement, research, technology, or active learning can shape what we build.

Next, we name a learning progression that fits the field and makes sense to students, then translate each Bloom level into course-specific questions, verbs, and clear student evidence. That step turns Bloom’s from a poster into a practical blueprint for rubrics, feedback, and scaffolding higher order thinking. We close by aligning the customized taxonomy with course outcomes, mapping real assessments to each level, adding examples for our future selves, and testing the framework on at least one assignment so we can revise with confidence.

  • Summer Sunday Scaries For Teachers — Start the Year Calm with Faith-Centered Strategies
    2026/07/28

That weird mix of calm and creeping dread in late summer can hit even the teachers who truly love their jobs. As the school year gets closer, old memories of tough student situations, endless to do lists, and emotional exhaustion can start playing on repeat. I want a different start for you this year: one that feels spiritually grounded, emotionally prepared, and realistic about the challenges ahead.

I share four faith based strategies you can practice daily to lower teacher anxiety and create a healthier transition back into the classroom. We talk through a simple pre bell prayer routine that turns your classroom or even your car into a sanctuary, plus a scripture anchor from Lamentations 3:22-23 to remind you that you get a fresh start every morning. We also dig into teacher burnout and boundaries: how to protect your home life, stop feeling guilty for saying no, and release the weight you carry for students by leaning on Matthew 11:28 and 1 Peter 5:7.

Community matters too, especially in a job that can feel isolating. We explore “finding your Paul and your Timothy” through mentoring, support, and encouragement inside and outside your school. Then we get practical about student behavior and classroom management by reframing disruption with compassion: de escalating in the moment, redirecting toward something constructive, and leaning on your school community when a student needs more support. We close with Colossians 3:23-24 as a reminder that your work has purpose even on the hard days.

Subscribe for more faith filled support for teachers, share this with a teacher who needs peace right now, and leave a review so more educators can find the show.
