You ever got so tired of waiting on God that you just decided to handle it yourself? And then it blew up in your face?

Today we're in Genesis 16. Ten years into waiting on a promise with nothing to show for it, Abram and Sarai get tired of holding on and try to help God out. And it makes a mess we're still feeling in the world today. We get into that moment where the waiting breaks you and you grab the wheel, how the fallout always spreads further than you think, and then the most tender turn in the whole chapter. A mistreated slave girl, pregnant and alone in the desert, becomes the first person in all of Scripture to give God a name. She calls Him the God who sees me.

Today we're in Genesis 15. God takes Abram outside on a dark night and tells a childless old man to look up and count the stars. We sit in that gap between what you can see in your empty hands and what God's promising over your head. We get into the honesty Abram had with God, and how God didn't get angry about it. The one verse the whole gospel is built on, where a man is made right with God just by believing. And the covenant moment almost nobody talks about, where God walks through the blood oath alone, so the promise would rest on Him and not on Abram.

God walks up to a seventy-five-year-old man and asks him to leave his country, his people, and everything that ever made him feel safe, and start walking toward a place He won't even name yet. We get into why God gives you the first step instead of the whole map, how this ties right back to the tower from last week — they grabbed for a name and lost it, Abram opened his hands and God filled them — and why it is never too late, because Abram's whole legacy came after seventy-five.

And I don't skip the messy part. The same man who trusted God with his whole life turned around and lied out of fear a few verses later. If you took a step of obedience and then stumbled right after, this one's for you.

That feeling that you gotta build something. Gotta be somebody. That if you can just hit the number, get the business where it needs to be, get people to look at you a certain way, then you'll finally be able to breathe.

Genesis 11 is about a whole civilization that felt exactly that. They said it out loud: let's make a name for ourselves. And Robert's honest about the fact that he's built that tower too, and what it cost him.

We get into why they really built it (it wasn't pride, it was fear), the line where God has to come down to look at the tallest thing humans ever built, and why God scattering them might've been mercy instead of punishment. Then the turn at the end of the chapter that changes everything: a whole city tried to make a name and lost it, and a few verses later God walks up to a nobody and just hands him one.

Before God ever sent the rain, He'd already drawn up the rescue.

Genesis 6 through 9 — Noah, the ark, the flood, and the promise still hanging in the sky every time it rains. We walk it slow and pull out what the felt-board version left behind: how "covenant" shows up here for the very first time in the whole Bible, and how God bound Himself to rescue before the first drop ever fell. The tender line most people miss — that Noah didn't shut the ark's door, God did. And the three words the entire flood turns on: "But God remembered."

Then the picture you've seen a hundred times and never really read. That "rainbow" is the Hebrew word for a war bow — a weapon. And God hung it up, pointed away, turning an instrument of judgment into a promise of peace.

God told a man exactly how to stop the worst thing he'd ever do — and he did it anyway.

Genesis 4 through 6. Cain and Abel, the first murder, and how the world went dark fast. This episode we get into the stuff underneath the story: the difference between your first and your leftovers, and why God saw it in the very first offering ever made. The predator picture God gives for sin — "crouching at your door" — and the gap where you still hear that same warning today.

Then the slide. How one man's fed jealousy becomes, four generations later, a guy bragging about violence — and a whole world where every thought was "only evil all the time." Sin doesn't stay the same size. It compounds.

But the dark isn't the last word. There's a thread of people who still call on God's name — and three of the most important words in the book: "But Noah found favor."

The first thing sin ever did to a human being wasn't make him bad. It made him hide.
