Not every argument deserves your participation.

Someone criticizes you, misrepresents you, or posts something you know is wrong—and immediately, you feel compelled to respond.

But Scripture says:

“Reject foolish and ignorant disputes, because you know that they breed quarrels.”
—2 Timothy 2:23

Not every disagreement is an opportunity God wants you to enter.

You can be right about the issue and still respond in the wrong spirit. You can win an argument but lose an opportunity to represent Jesus well.

Before responding, ask:

Is this conversation likely to produce understanding?
Am I motivated by love or wounded pride?
Can I speak with gentleness and patience?
Would silence serve God’s purpose better?

You do not have to correct every opinion, answer every accusation, or have the final word.

Spiritual maturity is knowing when to speak the truth with gentleness—and when to trust God enough to walk away.

Ask yourself:

Is it true?
Is it helpful?
Does it build up?
Does it give grace?
Does it sound like Jesus?

Ephesians 4:29 says, “No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear.”

Social media has made it easier than ever to react quickly, speak harshly, and forget there is a real person on the other side of the screen.

Followers of Jesus should sound different—even online.

You can be right and still be wrong in the way you say it.

Before you hit “post,” make sure your words sound like someone who has been changed by Jesus.

Your words are never “just words.”

They can build trust or destroy it.
They can calm a conflict or ignite one.
They can encourage someone or leave a wound they carry for years.

James 3 reminds us that the tongue is small, but incredibly powerful.

Our words can become weapons of division or instruments of healing.

Before you speak, ask:

Does this need to be said?
Does it need to be said this way?
Will it give grace to the person who hears it?

YOU DON'T HAVE TO MATCH THE TEMPERATURE OF THE ROOM.

“A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.” — Proverbs 15:1

Someone gets angry—we get angry.

Someone becomes sarcastic—we become sarcastic.

Someone attacks—we attack back.

But followers of Jesus don't have to be thermometers, simply reflecting the temperature around us.

We can be thermostats.

When others bring anger, we can bring peace.
When they bring hostility, we can bring grace.
When they bring division, we can bring reconciliation.

Gentleness isn't weakness.

It's strength under control.

So before you send the text, post the comment, answer the criticism, or respond in anger, ask:

“Am I about to raise the temperature—or lower it?”

You don't have to win every argument.

You don't have to attend every fight you're invited to.

And you don't have to let someone else's behavior determine yours.

Sometimes the most powerful answer isn't the loudest one.

It's the gentle one.

We live in a world where everyone wants to be heard—but fewer people are willing to listen.

James gives us a better way:

Be QUICK to listen.
SLOW to speak.
SLOW to anger.

What if, in our next disagreement, our goal wasn't to prove our point—but to understand the person?

You don't have to surrender your convictions to listen well.

You don't have to agree with someone to treat them with love.

And you don't have to win every argument.

Sometimes unity begins with simply saying:

“Help me understand.”

Unity grows when we listen before we speak, understand before we answer, and love people more than we love being right.

Sometimes the greatest threat to the Church isn't disagreement—it's how we handle it.

Romans 14 reminds us that faithful believers can disagree on secondary issues without treating one another as enemies.

Our unity isn't found in having identical opinions.
Our unity is found in following the same Savior.

The world expects Christians to argue.
What surprises the world is Christians who disagree with humility, extend grace, and continue to love one another.

Let's be known for protecting the unity Jesus prayed for—not by compromising truth, but by keeping Christ at the center of every conversation.

Our differences aren't erased—they're redeemed as we stand united around JESUS.

So when division seems to be winning, we keep pursuing unity.

When hatred gets loud, we keep loving.

When relationships become difficult, we keep forgiving.

When reconciliation takes time, we keep building bridges.

The world already knows how to divide. The Church should show the world another way.

Our future unity fuels our present faithfulness.

When HOPE is our destination, UNITY becomes our determination.

Let’s start living today like the people we will be for eternity.
