  • iRacing Struggles, NASCAR in Texas, IndyCar at Barber, F1 at Miami
    2025/05/09

As you know, we record on Wednesday evening after Wednesday Night Dash (on ⁨@Stadiumscene⁩ ) and this week has been an absolute struggle. You've noticed the broadcast did not happen live as scheduled Tuesday night and we ran into some scoring problems (maybe) at the end of Wednesday Night Dash. We get into those struggles on today's Garage Talk.

First up, we go into the details of how the broadcast fell apart on Tuesday and what D.J. had to do to somewhat rectify the mistake. We have a plan B if the broadcast were to fail, but it's not ideal. Here's what we did: https://youtu.be/fNlB9ya-Nig

Next, we've talked about Magic: The Gathering some on the show and D.J.'s 7 year old kid approached him asking about the cards on his desk and wanting to learn how to play. He ended up telling her that she needs to be a little older, but when is it ok to introduce that to your kids? D.J. thinks about age 10-12. What do you think?

Finally we close out this shorter than usual show with a recap of the weekend in racing, first with IndyCar at Barber, F1 at Miami, and NASCAR at Texas. We go over Erik's reaction to the finish including Michael McDowell's questionable blocking, and ultimately it being a Joey Logano win.

    • Giveaway Announcement, NASCAR at Talladega, NASCAR Sponsorship Issues
      2025/05/02

On this week's episode of F-R Racing's Garage Talk, we unveil the 2025 F-R Racing Anniversary giveaway! You'll want to stick around after the open to see what could be yours!

After that, Erik opens a pack of trading cards from Parkside Cards. Parkside is a smaller trading card producer who is the exclusive supplier for IndyCar and the NWSL. Erik has gotten lucky in the past and ended up with an autographed card. Will he this time?

Next, we move onto an issue brought up by Mike Joy last week on Kevin Harvick's show about NASCAR failing to adapt for the next generation of fans. With "youthful" sponsors and consumer products being replaced by B2B sponsors, is there a disconnect between the sponsors and the fans?

Finally, we get into Talladega weekend including a Top 10 in the ARCA race from Cleetus McFarland, a messy end to the Xfinity race, and a snooze fest of a cup race. Elton Sawyer (NASCAR competition director) thinks nothing is wrong, but is missing a huge point.

      • Eriks Birthday Spectacular, IndyCar Testing, Magic The Gathering?
        2025/04/25

Erik has officially crossed over the hill and reached 40 years old! On today's episode officially dubbed as Erik's Birthday Spectacular, we bring out our old friend Jeppson's Malört, discuss the IndyCar testing Internet issues, and somehow finish off the show talking about Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons.

First, We kick off the show with our old friend Jeppson's Malört as we celebrate Erik's birthday (spoiler alert, we never ended up doing the second shot) and look at famous people with the same birthday as Erik.

We then spin off and talk about D.J.'s copy of the 1998 Indianapolis 500 program and are reminded of a long time NASCAR driver who made his IndyCar debut that season. Next, we talk about the testing at Indianapolis and how IndyCar ended up with egg on its faces because the pit lane couldn't make an Internet connection and had no analytics data. Practice was held up for over two hours citing a "safety concern" which is fair, but it falls back on our discussion from last week about racing becoming too reliant on analytics and ultimately ruining the product some weeks.

Next, we talk about Rick Allen breaking his silence after his surprise exit from NASCAR and sharing his thoughts on the Dale Jr Download, Formula 1 having a hard time getting the price they want for a US TV deal. We dive into the future of live sports on tv and will this end up just driving more people to F1TV (our affiliate partner, see link below) if they can't get the deal they want? NASCAR returned to Rockingham and we briefly discuss that.

Finally, somehow we get into the discussion of how we played Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons as kids, get into our collections, and how D.J. regrets selling off his Magic: The Gathering collection as a teenager.

        • Seamlessly From Formula 1 To Napoleon Dynamite
          2025/04/18

If you watched the racing over the weekend you were left pretty bummed out. Bristol was a bust, Long Beach IndyCar was pretty boring, and Oscar Piastri ran away with the F1 race in Bahrain. The IMSA race at Long Beach was arguably the most compelling. Yet somehow we go way off course and spend probably more than half of our first ever marathon episode discussing everything else. If you decide to skip this episode, we don't blame you.

We kick off the show discussing Kyle Larson's eye-opening comments about how he likes racing in the Xfinity Series so he can embarrass the drivers, but unlike some of the talking heads, we discuss the context around the click bait headline and why it's a good thing he "embarrasses the kids" and how it happened to him when he was a youngster in the series. We dig into the history books and look at some of the Busch/Nationwide/Xfinity Series drivers who were good or great in the series, but never made it in the Cup Series.

Next we move on and discuss the drama with every team except for maybe Haas (weird, I know?) and after discussing where Max may end up next season we go off topic for a bulk of the rest of the show.

It starts off with Erik getting ready to celebrate his 40th birthday next week and a simple question is "Isn't Happy Birthday To You" now in the public domain? Answer: It is as of 2015. You know who else is in the public domain now? The original Winnie The Pooh which led to a low budget horror film involving Winnie the Pooh as the bad guy.In our now regular segment of TV and Movie updates, we talk about cult classic and movies that were terrible but we liked them anyway. Erik talks about "The Tree of Life" and D.J. mentions a movie of the old TV Show "McHale's Navy" staring Tom Arnold, David Alan Grier, and the great Tim Curry.

We do get back on the racing talk looking at the confirmed entry list for the 109th Indianapolis 500 and D.J. asks the question about why is there little to no marketing for the IMSA Series? Only 81000 people watched the Long Beach race on Saturday on USA and it's absolutely mind-blowing that with Americans loving sports cars why they don't market that to anyone.

Finally, we close out the show talking about D.J.'s car getting hit while stopped at a stop light last weekend. Everyone is fine and the car is mostly ok, but consider it a PSA about paying attention while driving.

          • Japanese Grand Prix was BORING, Darlington Throwback, D.J. Broke His Foot
            2025/04/11

We're back with another episode of F-R Racing's Garage Talk. In this week's episode we go over how BORING the F1 Japanese Grand Prix was, throwback weekend at Darlington, and D.J. broke his foot.To kick off the show, we announce our brand new partner, Nixon Watch Company. We're excited to become part of the Nixon family and proud to call Nixon the official watch of F-R Racing. To learn more, visit https://frracingonline.com/nixon (affiliate link).

Next up, we address the elephant in the room of why D.J. was back in the broadcast booth for the Indy Racing World Series race at Mid-Ohio. What D.J. was originally told was a left foot sprain, was actually a small break and during his testing/practice for Mid-Ohio his foot swelled up so he opted to sit this one out. It worked out ok because Taka forgot his Display Port to HDMI adapter and only had one monitor, shifting D.J. over to the first seat for the event.

Next, we discuss how the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix was incredibly BORING to the point even Oscar Piastri was surprised by the lack of highlights while in the cooldown room. There was more interesting drama during practice and qualification including Max Verstappen's unexpected record breaking lap in Q3.

After that, we discuss NASCAR throwback weekend at Darlington. How was the race? Is throwback weekend still necessary? If they do continue with it, what should the limit be?

We close it out talking about what's on TV including the Amazon Prime series "First to the Finish" featuring friend of the show, MX-5 Cup driver Heather Hadley. D.J. made it through episode one and hopes to finish the next episodes in the next week. He also discusses how you should be watching "The Studio" on Apple TV+.

            • Why You Should Attend the Sim Gaming Expo in Chicago with Founder, Jorge Anzaldo
              2025/04/04

Erik and D.J. are joined this week by Jorge Anzaldo, Founder of the Sim Gaming Expo. Jorge joins the show this week to talk about the inaugural Sim Gaming Expo, why it was put together, and how you as a creator can benefit from attending the show in Schaumburg, IL (Chicago Suburbs) from September 5th to the 7th.

As we dig into the details, we learn about the effort that went into booking the venue, the companies who will be attending, and our good friend ⁨@punjew⁩ also making an appearance!

Jorge sticks around for the second half of the show to discuss the sim racing community in general, the advantages of building a racing league in iRacing versus just participating in official races, and the community in general. D.J. also discusses the April Fools prank he nearly pulled on the IRWS drivers and the prank he did pull on his wife.

Finally, we do a quick rundown of the weekend in racing with F1 heading to Japan and NASCAR visiting Darlington for throwback weekend.

                2025/03/28

On this episode of F-R Racing's Garage Talk we kick off discussing the big news out of Red Bull that Liam Lawson is being demoted to Racing Bulls and replaced with Yuki Tsunoda after only two races. How bad of a PR move is this for Red Bull?

Next, we discuss D.J.'s least favorite race on the IndyCar calendar, The Thermal Club. From the boring race to the power outage knocking the FOX broadcast offline, the poor ratings, and the Country Club race with limited attendance, why would they keep coming here?

A little bit of off topic discussion comes in from the concept of Paw Patrol, D.J. and Erik's connection with Clifford The Big Red Dog's author, and Kangaroo Jack?

Finally, we recap the Homestead NASCAR weekend and how Kyle Larson came so close to pulling off the three race sweep.

                • NASCAR In Vegas, F1 in Australia, Brainstorming a New iRacing League
                  2025/03/21

On this week's episode of F-R Racing's Garage Talk, Erik and D.J. start off going off topic looking at concerts and a surprise throwback name on the 2025 Lollapalooza schedule. Once they get back on topic, it was time to recap the NASCAR weekend in Las Vegas and the rainy chaos of the Formula 1 opening round in Australia. Is Kimi Antonelli the real deal?

Next, we discuss our week in iRacing including D.J.'s unexpected return to the broadcast booth, Erik getting hosed by a software glitch, and the penalty flag that ruined Erik's Wednesday Night Dash.

Finally, we are talking about bringing out a new iRacing NASCAR themed development league for new and inexperienced drivers to work with each other and build up their race craft to better compete in Wednesday Night Dash. You can hear our process out loud as we go through eligibility, and even the name.

As an added bonus, we look at ways that NASCAR's Cup Series can become the Winston Cup again without it being a reference to the previous company (since legally that can't happen). We may have found a solution.
