In this episode of the Bee Formless™ Flow Driven CEO Conversations, I connected with Adrian Wolfberg, organisational scientist, advisor and Founder of Organizational Insight Consulting, for a fascinating exploration of AI, critical thinking, cognitive acuity and why the frameworks we've relied on to understand the world may no longer reflect the reality we're living in.
Drawing on a career spanning naval operations, intelligence and organisational research, Adrian explores how people develop insights, interpret complexity and make decisions when established ways of thinking are challenged.
One of the most interesting ideas Adrian introduced was that we're experiencing a transformation unlike anything human civilisation has encountered before, yet we're still trying to understand it through frameworks shaped by the Industrial Revolution.
We explored Adrian's concept of shared consciousness between humans and AI, and why he believes we need to rethink AI as something more than a tool. While AI can process information, identify patterns and generate possibilities at extraordinary speed, Adrian argues that understanding context, framing problems and considering the human consequences of decisions become increasingly important.
We then moved into the contradiction of clarity. When information is presented confidently and authoritatively, whether by another person or AI, we can become less inclined to question what we're being told.
We also explored cognitive offloading, the emerging leadership competency of cognitive acuity and why learning must evolve from accumulating knowledge towards recognising when our existing frames no longer reflect reality.
Adrian challenged our relationship with time itself. As AI accelerates the pace of work, we may need to do something that feels completely contradictory: slow down, develop exquisite awareness of the present and give ourselves the space to think.
THE SHAPE SHIFT IN MOTION
What happens when the frameworks that once helped us understand the world begin limiting our ability to see what's changing?
Through the Bee Formless™ methodology, this is how I saw the shift unfold:
LEARN: DIAGNOSE • UNDERSTAND • SUBTRACT • CHALLENGE
✨ Challenge the assumption that clarity automatically leads to better understanding and decisions.
✨ Recognise where established leadership and organisational frameworks no longer reflect present reality.
UNLEARN: REIMAGINE • RESHAPE • CREATE
✨ Reimagine leadership as creating the conditions for humans and AI to work together, rather than expecting leaders to have every answer.
✨ Reshape learning around cognitive acuity, context and recognising when our frames need to change.
RELEARN: TEST • IMPLEMENT • EMBODY
✨ Develop our capacity for critical thinking, framing, empathy and understanding the wider context.
✨ Continuously reassess how humans and AI contribute as circumstances and understanding evolve.
ACTIVE RECOVERY: INTEGRATE • RESTORE • EVOLVE
✨ Rethink our relationship with time, moving away from measuring everything through speed and output.
✨ Create space to slow down, observe the present and think before automatically accelerating into action.
