Why do students continue moving from grade to grade even when they haven't fully mastered the material?
In this episode, I take a closer look at social promotion—one of the most debated and misunderstood topics in education.
Supporters argue that retaining students can cause emotional harm and often fails to address the underlying problem. Critics worry that moving students forward without sufficient support can create academic gaps that become increasingly difficult to overcome later.
But what if retention and social promotion aren't the real issue?
What if both are simply responses to a much larger problem?
Drawing on research, classroom experience, and years spent working with students, I explore the difficult choices schools face when students fall behind, the unintended consequences of well-intentioned policies, and why meaningful support often arrives far later than it should.
Because at the end of the day, the question isn't whether students move forward.
It's whether they're truly prepared for what comes next.
