Skin regeneration is the body's natural repair process, essential for healing wounds and preventing infection. Estheticians and clients can support this process through proper wound care, nutrition, and UV protection.
When the skin is damaged, the body repairs itself in a four-stage process:
Hemostasis (Initial Response): Blood vessels constrict to limit blood loss.
Clotting (Scab Formation): The body stops the bleeding by becoming sticky and clotting. Serum and blood cells form a scab.
Repair/Proliferation: Cells called fibroblasts move to the area and begin to produce collagen—a protein vital for holding the skin, tendons, muscles, and bones together.
Remodeling (New Skin): The skin creates new skin cells to cover and repair the wound.
The rate at which lost skin is replaced is critical, as slow healing increases the risk of infection. Regeneration can be accelerated by:
Maintaining Moisture: Keeping the wound constantly moist speeds up the healing process. Products like hydrocortisone or aloe vera can be used.
UV Protection: Protecting the skin from UV light is essential, as sun exposure can damage the delicate healing tissue. Using sun cream lotions and balms will aid regeneration. It's important to avoid overexposure to sunlight or sunbeds.
Proper Nutrition: A healthy diet supports tissue formation and repair:
Protein is involved in the formation of collagen and new skin tissue.
Vitamins A and C are required for effective skin growth and repair.
A healthy diet aids in the healing process, which is especially beneficial for older people (who have less collagen) or those with serious disorders that impede regrowth.
