On this episode of GenX Classic Sports: Before Top Gun, Tom Cruise starred in All the Right Moves, a gritty 1983 high school football drama set in a struggling Pennsylvania steel town.

In this episode of GenX Classic Sports, we’re heading back to 1983 for this football classic starring a young Tom Cruise as Stef Djordjevic, a high school football player growing up in a struggling steel town in western Pennsylvania.

We’ll go beyond the movie’s memorable football scenes to explore the real-life Pennsylvania steel towns that inspired the story, the blue-collar culture that made high school football so important, and the fascinating behind-the-scenes details of filming in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

For those of us who grew up in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, All the Right Moves was more than a football movie—it was a snapshot of a different America, when Friday night football could mean everything to a town and one game could feel like a chance to change your life. So dust off that old letter jacket and join us as we revisit All the Right Moves on GenX Classic Sports!
