Dr. Sylvia Fogel is a psychiatrist and the parent of two adult children with autism, including a son with profound, nonspeaking autism and complex medical needs. Her personal experience has profoundly shaped her clinical and research interests.
Dr. Fogel chaired the development of the 2026–2028 Strategic Plan of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC), which establishes federal priorities for autism research, services, and supports. She continues to serve on the IACC, advocating for a systems biology approach to autism that integrates genetics, immune function, metabolism, and neurodevelopment, with particular attention to regression and profound autism.
Her clinical practice includes individuals with autism, PANS/PANDAS, and complex neuropsychiatric conditions, integrating conventional psychiatry with functional medicine and systems biology principles.
Dr. Fogel is an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and teaches in the MGH/McLean Psychiatry Residency Program. She received her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College and completed her psychiatry residency and psychoanalytic training at Columbia University, where she previously held academic and leadership positions.
She also serves on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health PANDAS/PANS Advisory Council and is a member of the Autism Innovation Coalition.
Dr. Fogel writes solely in her personal capacity.
