How certain must medicine be before it refuses a patient’s request?In this episode of Contested Bodies, I examine the role of risk, regret, uncertainty, and decision-making capacity in medical refusals of Body Integrity Dysphoria. The episode asks why uncertainty often closes the door for BID patients, and why this matters for medicine, autonomy, suffering, and the authority institutions exercise over the body. The episode explores how clinicians assess capacity, what happens when disagreement is interpreted as incapacity, and why visibility matters when some forms of suffering can be recognised while others remain difficult to see.
