Today, we sit a little longer. You'll learn the friendly little things people say while they wait for their coffee: how's it going, the weather, and "mmm, that's delicious." Small talk — how a stranger becomes a regular.
It's a scorching hot morning, and Mateo walks in wearing a heavy winter coat. Lucía teases him, fixes how he talks about the heat without missing a beat, and pours him a cold juice. Then the sky opens up — and it turns out Lucía loves a rainy day. And the coat? It has the last word. Sin prisa.
☕ Today's phrases
- ¿Qué tal? — How's it going? (the casual one)
- Hace calor. · Hace frío. — It's hot. · It's cold.
- Está lloviendo. — It's raining.
- ¡Qué rico! — How delicious! / So good!
- Hoy es un día bonito. — Today is a lovely day.
The word that breaks the rule: un día (a day) ends in "a" but takes un. Our "ends in -a → una" trick is a rule of thumb, not a law. Two more you'll meet soon: un mapa (a map) and una mano (a hand).
Just to recognize: ¿Qué tiempo hace? (what's the weather like?), hace sol (it's sunny), está nublado (it's cloudy), bueno… (well… / anyway…), ¡mira! (look!), pero (but).
Bringing back from Episodes 1–5: ¿cómo estás?, muy bien, gracias, un jugo, por favor, aquí tienes, ¿algo más?, quisiera una galleta de chocolate, and ¡qué bonito! from our Día de Muertos bonus.
🎯 Your tarea this week
Every morning, the first time you look outside, say the weather in Spanish — hace calor, hace frío, está lloviendo, or just hoy es un día bonito. And at the first bite of something good: ¡qué rico!
Why it works: the weather is new every single day — seven fresh reasons to speak Spanish, and you never have to go looking for them.
Nos vemos en el café. ¡Hasta la próxima!
