A J takes on Digger, Alejandro Iñárritu’s bizarre, ambitious and deeply uncomfortable satire starring Tom Cruise as an obscenely powerful energy tycoon.
What begins as a dark comedy about corporate greed and environmental catastrophe quickly becomes something much stranger — and considerably harder to explain without ruining the experience.
A J talks Tom Cruise disappearing beneath Digger Rockwell, the extraordinary Sandra Hüller and Riz Ahmed, a cat that may or may not represent the entire fucking planet, and a movie that keeps changing the rules while you’re watching it.
It’s absurd, cerebral, occasionally bewildering and definitely not going to work for everyone. But underneath all the weirdness is a furious examination of power, responsibility and our remarkable ability to keep ignoring consequences we can already see coming.
And A J hasn’t stopped thinking about it since.
