For nearly two decades, Chisako Kakehi watched on as her partners passed away one by one. Although she claimed that she had been “doomed by fate” to endure these tragedies, after the death of her fourth and final husband, Isao Kakehi, in 2013, the Japanese authorities finally became suspicious enough to perform a postmortem. After the autopsy confirmed that he hadn’t died from natural causes, investigators began digging into her past, ultimately discovering a series of poisonings that had made Chisako a very wealthy widow indeed.
