Episode 50 : Faith and Firearms — A Christian View of Self-Defense.
1. Is self-defense biblical?
Scripture supports the defense of life while rejecting violence as a goal.
- Luke 22:36 acknowledges preparedness in dangerous times
- Exodus 22:2 recognizes justified self-defense in certain situations
- Nehemiah 4:17-18 shows God’s people working while prepared to defend
- Psalm 82:4 calls believers to protect the vulnerable
At the same time, Matthew 5:39 addresses personal retaliation, not the defense of others.
2. Moral responsibility of carrying a weapon
With capability comes accountability and self-control.
- Luke 12:48 teaches that greater responsibility comes with greater authority
- Proverbs 25:28 warns against lack of self-control
- Galatians 5:22-23 emphasizes self-control, patience, and gentleness
- James 1:19-20 cautions against anger-driven actions
3. Defense is about protecting life, not aggression
The intent must always be preservation, not escalation.
- John 15:13 highlights sacrificial love for others
- Romans 12:18 calls for peace whenever possible
- Proverbs 4:23 emphasizes guarding the heart and motives
- Micah 6:8 calls for justice, mercy, and humility
- Matthew 26:52 warns against living by violence
Core message:
The Bible supports defending life, but it does not celebrate violence. A Christian who carries a weapon should demonstrate discipline, restraint, and a commitment to protecting others.
