What if one of the greatest obstacles to fruitfulness is believing that everything depends on you?
In John 15:5–8, Jesus describes Himself as the vine and His followers as the branches. The picture challenges a familiar idea about success: that greater results come simply from greater effort, ability or control. Jesus calls us to a different understanding — one in which purposeful action flows from an ongoing relationship with Him.
Through the life of Dr Ida Sophia Scudder, the Christian physician whose work helped establish what became Christian Medical College, Vellore, we see a practical illustration of faith expressed through preparation, initiative and service to others.
This episode considers what it means to remain in Christ while developing our gifts, taking responsibility and pursuing meaningful work. It also examines what fruitfulness really looks like, why dependence on God is not passivity, and why visible results alone cannot define a fruitful life.
The central thought: You are called to bear fruit, not to become the source.
