🎙️Podcast Description

What does it cost when the person everyone relies on feels they can’t admit they’re struggling?

We often celebrate leaders for staying composed under pressure, making difficult decisions, and remaining calm through uncertainty. But somewhere along the way, strength became confused with silence—and many leaders learned to believe that being capable means never letting anyone see them struggle.

In this solo episode of The Grounded Leader, I explore the hidden cost of that belief.

Anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, and chronic stress don’t always look dramatic from the outside. Sometimes they look like perfectionism. Longer workdays. Irritability. Difficulty concentrating. Emotional numbness. Or a highly accomplished person continuing to perform while quietly running on empty.

And when leaders believe they must hide every difficult emotion, that silence doesn’t affect only them. It can shape the culture of an entire workplace.

In this episode, I also share reflections from my own experiences with grief and health challenges—and why I’ve come to believe that resilience is built less through dramatic breakthroughs and more through small, repeated acts of care.

✨ Key Takeaways

  1. High performance doesn’t always mean someone is well. Leaders can continue achieving while privately navigating significant emotional and mental health challenges.
  2. A leader’s silence can influence workplace culture. When leaders feel they must appear invulnerable, employees may receive the message that they should hide their struggles too.
  3. Privacy and silence are not the same thing. Healthy leadership doesn’t require sharing every detail of your personal life. It means recognizing that boundaries and humanity can coexist.
  4. Resilience is built through repeated acts of care. Sleep, nourishment, movement, support, and nervous system regulation may seem small, but these practices create the foundation for sustainable leadership.
  5. Taking care of your mental health is part of leadership. The state of your nervous system influences how you communicate, make decisions, navigate conflict, and show up for the people who depend on you.

✨ A question to consider:

What message does the way you handle your own struggles send to the people you lead?

You don’t need to become your team’s therapist or disclose everything you’re going through. But you can help create a culture where someone can say, “I’m struggling,” without believing it makes them less capable.
