Deadlines create pressure—but they should not be allowed to make the decision for you.
In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores what happens when time compression begins to distort judgment, communication, and priorities. Strong leaders know how to use a deadline to create focus without allowing urgency to turn into panic.
In This Episode
- Why time pressure changes behavior
- How deadlines can distort priorities
- The difference between focus and panic
- Why planning debt often shows up as last-minute urgency
- How to simplify when time is short
- Why clear standards matter more as the clock runs down
Today’s Pressure Prep
1. Identify the deadline creating the most pressure. Ask:
What deadline is most likely to change the way I behave today?
Recognize it before the pressure rises.
2. Define the non-negotiable. Ask:
When the deadline arrives, what absolutely must be true?
One outcome. One standard. One priority.
Reflection
When I feel behind, do I become more focused—or simply more frantic?
Remember:
Respect the deadline. Don’t surrender your judgment to it.
And:
Focus says: we have limited time, so here is what matters. Panic says: we have limited time, so everything matters.
When time gets short, make the standard clear.
