How can you tell whether a revelation is from God—or only feels true? David Patten joins me today to explore that question through early Latter-day Saint history, examining Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, Hiram Page, and James Brewster as case studies in revelation, disagreement, and correction. We trace how revelation developed during the Restoration and discuss the tension between grace andworks, the authority to guide the church, and the challenge of correcting sincere but mistaken beliefs. A central theme is Joseph Smith’s test for discernment: true revelation does not contradict earlier true revelation. The conversation also considers why people may be drawn to dramatic propheticclaims, how misinformation can distort what we believe, and why persuasive presentation is not the same as truth.
