Winter in Denmark is coming. The days are getting shorter, the coats are coming back out, and if you live here, you know exactly what's ahead.
This week on The Scandi Shift, we're revisiting one of our earliest episodes: The 8-Month Danish Winter.
Before we get into it, Meg shares a little update about the podcast. After nearly a year of hosting The Scandi Shift together, Selena has started an exciting new full-time role, which means the podcast is shifting too. Meg will be continuing the show, with more solo episodes, conversations and other voices along the way. And Selena isn't disappearing. She'll still be back when life and schedules allow.
Then we're heading back into the Danish winter.
What is it actually like to get through months of darkness in Denmark, especially when you didn't grow up with it? From sunsets that seem to happen in the middle of the afternoon to candles, hygge, comfort food and figuring out how to keep yourself — and your kids — from going stir-crazy, we talk about what we've learned about surviving and even enjoying winter in Denmark.
We get into:
- Why the Danish winter can feel like it lasts eight months
- The reality of Denmark's dark, short winter days
- Hygge, candles and why Danes lean so hard into coziness
- Mormor mad and the comfort foods that get us through the season
- Surviving winter in Copenhagen with kids
- Getting out of the house when it's cold, wet and dark
- Finding community and staying social through the winter months
- Learning not just to endure Danish winter, but to find things to love about it
Whether you're heading into your first winter in Denmark or your tenth, consider this your reminder that the darkness is coming... but we've got this.
