Russ Hoinke is primarily known as a prominent bowling business owner and former manager of Western Bowl in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is part of the historic Hoinke family, which pioneered The Hoinke Classic, widely recognized as one of the largest and most prestigious private amateur bowling tournaments in the United States. The Family Legacy : The tournament was originally founded in 1943 by his grandfather, Erwin Hoinke Sr., to promote the sport and war bonds. It was later expanded significantly by Russ's father, Erwin "Erv" Hoinke Jr., a legendary figure in the Cincinnati bowling community. Russ Hoinke operated Western Bowl—a massive 68-lane landmark on Cincinnati's West Side that served as the long-time home of the tournament. In 2009, citing financial strains from a shifting economy, the fading popularity of traditional bowling leagues, and local legislative changes, Russ Hoinke and his family made the tough decision to step away from the business. The iconic facility and the tournament itself were eventually transitioned to new ownership, moving to the Strike & Spare family entertainment group. Though the family no longer owns the center, the prestigious Hoinke Classic legacy continues to host tens of thousands of bowlers annually.
