Her mother insists Marla stayed home that day with chickenpox, and the babysitter's Polaroid proves it.Then she finds four more photographs, at four more family events she never attended, each one labeled on the back in her grandmother's hand. In the attic's cedar chest wait nine clothbound diaries, an iron box with two certificates that weigh exactly the same, and the answer to a question Marla never knew her family was keeping.
