A night nurse spends three months caring for a patient in a deep coma. Every night, in the polished-steel mirror behind his bed, she sees a woman standing in the room — a woman who is not her, and not any of the other nurses. Her account, in her own words.

STORY SUMMARY
Diane worked the third floor of Saint Augustine Memorial Hospital — a long-term care ward where patients stayed for months, sometimes years. Mr. Ellis, a retired civil engineer in a deep coma, was expected to decline within the month. He did not. And as the weeks stretched on, Diane began to notice a figure in the mirror behind his bed: a woman, standing where no one was standing, watching the patient — and, in time, watching her.
What the figure wanted, and why it waited, is the heart of tonight's account.
