Today we are joined by Phil Hartman of Two Boots Pizza. A filmmaker turned restaurateur, Phil first helped open the Great Jones Café in NoHo in 1983 before shooting his independent feature No Picnic. He then opened Two Boots in the East Village in 1987 in part to raise the money needed to finish the film. Blending the culinary traditions of Italy and Louisiana, Two Boots went on to become one of New York’s most distinctive pizza institutions. Over nearly four decades, it has become as much a part of the city’s cultural fabric as its food scene, with deep ties to independent film, music, art and neighborhood life. Phil has remained at the center of it all, building a business that has survived—and reflected—decades of relentless change in New York.
