A twenty-two-year-old tank crewman was so eager to hand Russia the Army's Abrams data that he never noticed every "Russian" he spoke to worked for the FBI.
Taylor Adam Lee, a 22-year-old U.S. Army specialist assigned to a tank crew at Fort Bliss, Texas, decided in 2025 that he wanted to help Russia — and set out, on his own initiative, to find someone in Russian intelligence to give it to. What he found instead, at every turn, was the FBI.
Using contacts he believed would connect him to real Russian operatives, Lee offered detailed technical information about the M1A2 Abrams main battle tank, one of the Army's most closely guarded weapons platforms, along with export-controlled technical data. Every conversation and every exchange was run by an undercover FBI operation from the very beginning, meaning the information he tried to hand over never reached anyone but federal investigators building a case against him.
The episode is a study in what a fully-run sting looks like from the inside: how the FBI let Lee believe he was succeeding at every stage, what indicators inside the Army should have flagged him earlier, and why being caught immediately doesn't mean the intent and the danger weren't real.
Lee has been charged with attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign adversary and attempted unlicensed export of controlled technical data. He has not been convicted and the case remains pending.
