On the night of July 5, 2012, 16-year-old honor student Skylar Neese slipped out of her bedroom window in Star City, West Virginia, climbed into a waiting sedan, and disappeared into the night.

Initially dismissed by authorities as a typical teenage runaway, Skylar’s disappearance quickly turned into every parent’s worst nightmare as days stretched into weeks with zero contact. At the center of the frantic search were her two inseparable best friends, Shelia Eddy and Rachel Shoaf. Shelia spent hours comforting Skylar’s grief-stricken parents, helping hand out missing-person flyers, and posting emotional pleas across social media. But as investigators began pulling cell tower records, dissecting security footage, and uncovering erratic online posts, the girls’ alibis started to unravel.

Six months later, a psychological breakdown triggered a confession that shattered the tight-knit community: Skylar hadn’t run away. Her two closest confidantes had lured her into a remote patch of Pennsylvania woods with a premeditated plan, murder weapons, and a calculated count of three. When asked why they did it, the motive proved far more terrifying than any crime of passion.

In this episode, we unpack the timeline of Skylar’s disappearance, the digital breadcrumbs that cracked the case wide open, the chilling coldness of adolescent psychopathy, and the lasting legacy of "Skylar’s Law" that reformed missing-child alerts nationwide.
