When we think about pet therapy, we often picture the comforting moments: the cuddles, companionship, emotional support, and unconditional love. But what happens when the pet you adopt comes with anxiety, fear, and a history that requires patience, training, and trust-building?
In this episode of Both Sides of the Couch, I share my experience adopting Vixey, an anxious rescue dog with a bite history, and the unexpected lessons she's taught me about pet therapy, chronic illness, relationships, and myself. Through both my personal experience and my therapist lens, we'll explore how pets can support emotional regulation, create structure and purpose, and offer companionship during difficult seasons of life while also acknowledging the challenges that often go unspoken.
