Christ who was rich became poor so that we might become rich in Him. He gave Himself up for the Church to sanctify and cleanse her, and to present her to Himself a glorious Bride. Our marriages are that story on a smaller scale. A man who does not love his wife as his own body lies about Christ and the Church.
A husband’s love provides for his wife—paying the bills, resourcing her work, planning wisely, and spending in a way that shows he cherishes her as his own flesh. A husband’s love protects his wife. The story of Scripture is “kill the dragon, get the girl.” Adam failed; the Second Adam did not. Deceivers still target wives and children, so a husband’s love must be protective. A husband’s love also leads his wife. God gives the man a mission and gives him his Eve as helper. He must know his calling and communicate it so she can help him.
The full gospel is “kill the dragon, get the girl, and save the world.” Husbands provide, protect, and then get to work building the kingdom.
