In this episode, Lynda and Jon continue their conversation about why sameness, predictability and familiarity can feel so comforting after childhood loss. For both of them, routine is a choice. Knowing what to expect creates a sense of security and control when they learned far too young that life can change without warning.

Their conversation turns to goodbyes and reveals something fascinating: the same kind of loss can leave people with completely different responses.

For Jon, saying goodbye is essential. His mother never had the chance to say goodbye to him, and perhaps because of that, he makes a point of saying goodbye whenever he leaves a gathering, no matter how small or casual.

For Lynda, it is almost the opposite. She would much rather quietly slip away. Goodbye feels too final, too emotional and sometimes even frightening. Yet underneath their very different behaviours is something remarkably similar: neither of their mothers ever got to say goodbye.

One needs to say it. The other finds it difficult to say. Both recognize how deeply that response may be connected to what they experienced as children.

It is another reminder that grief is deeply personal. There is no single right way to grieve, respond to loss or carry our experiences forward.

Lynda and Jon also explore what happens when the final chapter of a relationship is painful. Perhaps there was an argument, unresolved conflict, a difficult period or simply words left unsaid. That final encounter was only one moment in an entire relationship. A life and a relationship are so much bigger than their ending.

Sometimes healing means remembering the whole story, not just the goodbye.
