What does “home” mean when your children grow up between cultures?

In Episode 3 of our special Built Differently series, we continue our conversation with Jon and Dulce and explore one of the most complicated parts of life in the mission field: raising a family between cultures.

Living in another country is one thing. Raising children there is something entirely different.

Jon and Dulce share what it was like to navigate parenting across cultures—from language and education to friendships, faith, identity, and the challenge of helping their children understand where they belong.

For children who grow up between cultures, the question of “Where are you from?” doesn't always have a simple answer. What feels like home to one person may feel completely different to another. And for parents, creating a sense of belonging while also helping their children appreciate multiple cultures can be both beautiful and challenging.

We talk about the unexpected questions their children asked, the challenges they faced as parents, and how raising kids in another culture shaped their family—and their understanding of faith and home.

This isn't just a story about missionary families. It's a conversation about parenting, identity, belonging, faith, and what it means to create a home when home isn't necessarily a place.

Because sometimes finding home isn't about where you live. It's about where you belong.
