In this episode, I sit down with my client Claire Stewart, who shares her journey through birth trauma after her first home birth—an experience marked by a typical cascade of interventions initiated by her midwife when she went past 42 weeks, ultimately leaving her feeling disempowered and disconnected from her body. Like so many women after midwifery abuse, Claire found herself questioning whether she could trust anyone in the birth space and began contemplating freebirth as a way to protect her autonomy. What unfolded instead was a deeply redemptive birth supported by a sovereign, loving licensed midwife and myself as her doula, where everything happened on Claire’s time, with full informed consent, autonomy, and reverence for her authority. Surrounded by support that honored her intuition and choices, Claire experienced an empowered, physiological birth—one that didn’t require doing it alone, but rather being fully held, heard, and respected. This conversation powerfully illustrates that autonomy is not about who you hire or don’t hire—it’s about always remaining in charge of your birth.
