October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Imagine this: It's 1959. You're a 28 year-old mother who has just delivered a baby through a traumatic precipitous birth. They congratulate you on your "beautiful blond bundle of fluff." Then when you're alone in your hospital room, a doctor you've never met walks in and callously tells you that your newborn son will be like a tree trunk, unable to do anything but stand there, because he was born with Down syndrome. His advice? Put him in an institution, so he doesn't become a "stigma" to your family. After all, your husband is embarking on a career as a medical doctor.

That's what happened to my mother after giving birth to her second-born child. But in a courageous act that would have ripple effects through generations, she promptly rejected him and his advice. Together with my dad and the rest of the family, she helped Ralph reach his full potential.

The result? He lived a full, happy, productive life that included special education, a full-time job, WWE matches, movies, ballroom dancing, vacations, social events, parties…and plenty of love.

Episode 59 celebrates Ralph's legacy and offers genuine hope for parents raising children with Down Syndrome. It features interviews with his mother, Rose DiGiovanni, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
