A boundary doesn't only change what you will or won't do. It can change the role you have been playing in the relationship, and the grief that follows is often hard to name, especially when no one has left.

In this episode, Gloria Lybecker and Gail Donohue explore what can happen after a boundary holds: the role of the one who always says yes, keeps the peace, or never seems to need anything, and why a relationship organized around that pattern may not know how to reorganize around the person you are becoming. They talk about how a boundary can feel sudden to the other person when it has been forming inside for a long time, and why listening to your quieter no earlier can help.

Gloria and Gail look at what there may be to grieve: the closeness you thought you had, the person you hoped someone would become, the old identity of being the one who was always needed, and the time spent not fully present with yourself. They also talk about how relief, sadness, guilt, anger and love can be present together, why disappointment is not the same as harm, and the difference between taking responsibility for how you spoke and withdrawing the boundary itself.

Near the end, they explore how to stay with yourself while a relationship finds its new shape: looking for patterns instead of judging a relationship by one uncomfortable conversation, asking whether you can remain a whole person in it, keeping the boundary simple, and making your next choice from connection with yourself instead of the urgency to restore someone else's comfort.
