Ep 340 Peacewarts: Biomimic Defense 101 – The Ground Underneath: Mycorrhizal Mesh and Quiet Infrastructure (Class 5)

We explore how the physical architecture of mycorrhizal fungal hyphae—binding soil aggregates to prevent erosion—teaches us the importance of protecting the quiet, invisible substrate of human and ecological peace. Drawing from nature's subterranean engineering, we examine three historical anchors: the Dust Bowl and the 1935 Soil Conservation Act, the protection of unique crop genetics at the Vavilov Institute (1941–1944), and ancient Amazonian Terra Preta soil building.

Homework:

1. Look up the history of Hugh Hammond Bennett and the 1935 Soil Conservation Act, or find out what the Vavilov collection contained and where it is located today, and summarize how protecting physical infrastructure preserved future life.
2. Write down one question about any of this episode's topics. If you don't have a question, write 'no question.'
3. Optional: Journal about the "invisible maintenance" in your own life or community. What quietly holds your daily routine together, and how can you help protect that foundation?

Books: If you would like to read more on this subject, some book suggestions are Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake, Where Our Food Comes From by Gary Paul Nabhan, and Terra Preta by Ute Scheub.
