John 5:19-47
Main Question: Do you simply know what God can do—or do you truly believe He can work in your life?
Summary:In John 5:19–47, Jesus confronts religious leaders who knew Scripture, understood God's laws, and knew the stories of His miraculous power—yet when God was working right in front of them through Jesus, they rejected Him.
Jesus makes it clear that He and the Father are working together. He has the authority and power to give life, even raising the dead. Eternal life isn't merely a future promise; through Christ, we can pass from death to life now.
The danger for us is the same one the religious leaders faced: we can know a great deal about God without truly trusting God. We can study Scripture, attend church, know theology, and remember what God has done for others while still doubting that He can redeem our own brokenness.
Scripture was always meant to point us to Jesus. Knowledge alone cannot save us—Jesus does. God is still working, still restoring, still redeeming, and still bringing life out of death. The question is whether we will trust Him with our own lives.
Key Takeaways:- God is still working. He hasn't given up on you or stopped working in people's lives.
- Knowing about God isn't the same as knowing God.
- Knowledge cannot save you—Jesus can.
- Jesus has both the authority and the power to give life.
- Eternal life begins now. Jesus brings us from spiritual death into life through faith in Him.
- Scripture points us to Jesus. Don't become so focused on knowing the Bible that you miss the One the Bible reveals.
- Don't limit God to how you think He should work. He has the authority to work according to His will and for His glory.
- Your brokenness is not beyond God's ability to redeem.
- Don't believe God's miracles are only for someone else. The God you've seen work in others is able to work in you.
- Faith is more than information. God didn't give us facts to transform our lives—He gave us His Son.
You've heard what God can do. You've seen what God can do. The question is: Do you believe He can do it in you?
Gospel Response:Jesus did not come expecting us to fix ourselves. He came to save us.
He entered our broken world, lived the life we could never live, experienced rejection and suffering, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead so that we can have eternal life—not simply someday, but new life in Him beginning now.
Stop trusting merely in what you know about Jesus and trust Jesus Himself. Give Him the brokenness, addiction, pain, relationships, fear, or circumstances you've been trying to fix yourself. Believe that the God who has worked in the lives of others can work in you too.
