A new dog has entered the house — and she’s snarky, mischievous, surprisingly strong and determined to hump anything in her path. In “When Your Rescue Dog Rescues You,” Janine tells Isadora about grieving the loss of her longtime companion and deciding she couldn’t wait any longer to bring another rescue dog into her life.
What follows is a crash course in new motherhood: sleeping in a makeshift dog bed, surviving a post-spay recovery cone and trying to stay one step ahead of a pint-sized menace who chews metal, bends forks and shreds steel wool. Meanwhile, Isadora introduces us to her own compact, muscle-bound dog, whose tough exterior hides the lasting trauma of a near-fatal attack.
The conversation moves from the chaos of canine behavior to the deeper bond between people and the animals they rescue. Janine recognizes something of herself in dogs who have been wounded, rejected, or deemed “too much” — and makes the choice to love her new girl through whatever comes. Sometimes the animals we save are the ones who understand us best.
This episode explores grief, trauma, trust, and the healing presence of dogs. Surprisingly spiritual, Janine and Isadora wonder if some of us are here to serve as guardians of animals and how every dog may carry a little bit of God inside them.
