Meredith's line on Salt Lake City this week stopped us cold: "You can do everything right, but you can't control how things unfold." Amy paused the TV to write it down. She has a 21-year-old son. Mary had one too. The cold open, filmed right after Robert Jr. got out of jail, makes the ending of the season genuinely devastating to sit with. We also get into Ultimate Girls Trip, where Portia's one-liner about Luann ("Not only can Luann not really sing, she can't read a room either") captures exactly why this show keeps working, and drunk Luann in Miami is a force entirely unto herself. Below Deck's Jen situation went from appalling to darkly comic through sheer editing brilliance, but the laundry note with the smiley face is not an accident and we're not pretending it is. New York gave us one of the more uncomfortable lunches in recent Bravo memory, with Jessel treating Carol's grief over JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette like entertainment trivia while the whole table tried to signal her to stop. Orange County's Heather is simply too good for the current lineup, and the Next Gen reunion had Andy asking Charlie directly whether some of his hostility toward Brooks might be homophobia. Charlie's "I have a gay friend" defense landed exactly as well as it always does. On the book side: Sally Field just won an Emmy for Remarkably Bright Creatures, and we recommend reading the Shelby Van Pelt novel first. Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth and Too Old for This by Samantha Downing are both five-star dark comedies featuring older women who are technically the villains and absolutely should not be. Careless People by Sarah Wynn Williams traces Facebook's early years and makes the case that what shaped social media wasn't malevolence but carelessness. And Matthew Perry's Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing reframes what addiction actually is in ways that stick. Salt Lake City fans in particular should pick it up right now.
