We are cousins from Appalachia, Virginia, shaped by the same mountain farm, the same grandparents, and 24 first cousins spread across more than thirty years in age. Our grandfather built his house by hand, plowed with horses long after tractors were standard, and resisted indoor plumbing to the end. He and our grandmother raised eight children on a small dairy farm in rural Virginia and sent every single one of them to college, selling a cow each year to cover the tuition. Our mother was the fourth daughter. She enrolled at a school known for its corps of cadets, sat through a math professor who announced on day one he would never pass a girl, stayed anyway, and graduated with a math degree in the late 1950s. Books were the family currency we both grew up on. Jessica's family kept shelves full of them and treated reading as a legitimate use of time. Her dad was the known bookworm of the whole extended family. The rule was simple: once you turned 13, no book was off-limits, which made the forbidden titles feel like prizes worth hunting for. Amy's mother stocked Agatha Christie, Louis L'Amour, and classics, and never said a word about the Sweet Valley High and Danielle Steel Amy was quietly working through in the corner. The philosophy was the same in both houses: she's reading, what's the problem? We both came out of it with a catalog of words we knew perfectly from the page but had never heard spoken aloud, mispronounced confidently for years before anyone corrected us. Bravo entered our lives through different doors. Jessica was there for the first episode of Real Housewives of Orange County and has watched every U.S. Housewives franchise since. Amy found her way in through YouTube clips of the New Jersey table flip while stationed in South Korea, and went all in on every franchise during her second return to teaching because she needed something running in the background while grading papers. What keeps us both watching is the psychology of conflict: who apologizes, who doubles down, who surprises you by being sympathetic in a specific moment even when you don't generally like them. Reading and watching Bravo scratch variations of the same itch. Both put you inside lives that aren't yours, and both give you other people's conflicts to sit with until you figure out what you would have done differently.
