FEVER CLOWNS author Caleb Bethea returns for two films where clowns are the *least* of our worries. We begin in the silent era with Victor Sjöström's 1924 psychological thriller HE WHO GETS SLAPPED, starring Lon Chaney as the most masochistically humiliated clown in screen history. Disturbing in a very different way is Victor Salva's 1989 slasher CLOWNHOUSE, which was somehow still released after its director was imprisoned for abusing its child star. We discuss whether it's truly unwatchable with that knowledge, and how Salva still ended up with a career that included hits like JEEPERS CREEPERS.
