Winslow makes the year's last crossing out to Still Timber on a cold late autumn day, eleven miles of open water under sail, and spends the night in the trees above his boat.
The box out there wants seeing to before winter has the water. He goes over on the morning tide, sails while the daylight lasts, and comes ashore with the light already going. Above the landing the trees close overhead and the sea drops away behind him, and what is left is a small fire, a blanket, and the water working somewhere below.
Under oars a boat talks the whole way over. Under sail she goes quiet, and the water comes past in one long word.
The ledger runs to some two thousand entries. They surface here as they are found, not in order.
The map is never finished.
A quiet layer of the sea working somewhere below the trees plays underneath the reading throughout.
The entry is read twice. The second reading is slower than the first, for anyone still awake.
An ocean sleep story for adults. Every entry is also on YouTube, where a ten hour version carries the same reading and then leaves the sound of the island running all night: https://youtube.com/@thewinslowjournal
