It all begins in the small village of Weihendahl, at a time when knights earn their titles through disgrace and shame, many a hypocritical clergyman has fallen prey to beer, and royal couples are murdering one another. The villagers are already plagued by nightmares, for evil seems to be on the loose in nearby Kallenburg. But the young farmer’s daughter Alexandra is also plagued by nightmares. Strange images and verses appear in her dreams, presenting her with riddles that she can notshake.
Nevertheless, the Nordic blacksmith Tronndahn and an attractive young count vie for the heart of the lovely Alexandra, causing every encounter between the rivals to lead to misunderstandings and heated confrontations. Alexandra feels more drawn to the count, but the Norse man is convinced that he is nothing but an impostor who is merely taking advantage of the women, and he wants to prevent him from breaking Alexandra’s heart and winning the young woman for himself.
Knight Markus, a member of the Brotherhood of Seven, would rather fight his way through the beds than across the battlefield, breaking the hearts of many a lady with fatal consequences, for the knight detests committed relationships; yet he serves Queen Theodora of Kallenburg. It has long been known there that the alcoholic King Enesthor would be only too happy to assassinate her, but she has long since devised plans to thwart this. But will she succeed?
Amid the romantic chaos in Weihendahl and Kallenburg, a powerful shadow is spreading its wings, and mysterious incidents are on the rise, as more and more people are disappearing under puzzling circumstances or being brutally murdered.
Of all people, it falls to the humorous yet chaotic men of the Brotherhood of Seven who are actually craftsmen and that roguish knight of dubious reputation to investigate these strange occurrences. They realize too late that the real intrigue has long since begun and that they are all merely puppets in a diabolical game, manipulated by a power not of this world.
