Lithium-ion batteries made up about 94% of global energy storage capacity additions in 2025. Sodium-ion made up about 0.4%. Landon Mossburg, CEO and cofounder of Peak Energy, thinks the industry underestimates how fast that could change.

Mossburg told Hering why Peak Energy is betting on passively cooled sodium-ion systems, arguing they bring safety and permitting advantages, longer life, and a strong fit for data centers. He also discusses the company's path to bankability ahead of a new factory opening, and what's at stake for the US battery supply chain as China invests heavily in the technology.

The Texas grid experienced record electricity demand in summer 2026 while posting some of the lowest power prices in nearly a decade. That might be good for customers, but it makes for a tough investment environment if you want to build a gas plant. And with surging demand projections and increasingly extreme weather swings, many believe Texas needs significant new dispatchable generation, mainly gas, to prepare.
