A new 30-foot steel border wall is rising near El Paso’s historic Hart’s Mill, threatening to disrupt the legacy of Don Juan de Oñate’s 1598 expedition and El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro—a route poised for UNESCO recognition. Just yards from nonprofit Abara, which offers humanitarian aid and education, construction crews are already at work, adding razor wire to existing fences. With nearly $1.6 billion spent on border infrastructure in the El Paso Sector—including a “Smart Wall” tech system—officials remain silent on where this new barrier will stand or how it might impact Abara’s land and future campus plans. The community fears losing irreplaceable historical connections as development accelerates without transparency.

El Paso City Council unanimously voted to scrap 150 fixed license plate reader cameras from Flock Safety, banning future use of similar tech without approval — while leaving police mobile units and private business cameras untouched. With 60 days to remove the gear (owned by Flock), or face being covered with opaque material for 30 more days, the move follows state funding cuts and police department’s own termination of the contract. Though police chief praised the cameras’ investigative value — including a 62% spike in auto thefts since removal — council members voiced concerns over misuse and data sharing elsewhere. City manager and attorney are now negotiating Flock’s removal, with potential costs looming if the company doesn’t act.
