In this on-location episode of Sustainably SAJe, we visit West 5 in London, Ontario, a community developed by Sifton Properties that demonstrates what sustainability looks like when it is embedded directly into the places where people live, work, shop, gather and build community.

West 5 brings together the environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainability through an integrated approach to community design. Solar energy, energy-efficient buildings, smart energy systems, green roofs, water-management strategies and high-performance building envelopes operate alongside walkability, mixed-use development, local businesses, trails, gathering spaces and Legacy Square—the community's social heart.

This episode looks beneath the visible features of West 5 to explore the systems thinking behind the development: solar generation, net-zero design, smart-grid thinking, building efficiency, community programming, local economic activity and continuous learning from one phase of development to the next.

More importantly, we ask what West 5 can teach other communities. Sustainable development is not achieved through a single technology, building or policy. It requires designing whole systems in which environmental performance, economic viability and human wellbeing reinforce one another.

Because the future of sustainability will ultimately be shaped not only in boardrooms, universities or climate summits, but in the communities we create—**how we build, move, gather, consume energy, support local economies and design places for generations to come.

Special thanks to Nick Cavaliere, Manager of Building Assets at Sifton Properties, for his generosity, expertise and hospitality in helping us explore the West 5 story.
