Where did the concept of Innate Intelligence actually come from? For generations, chiropractors have learned about Innate Intelligence, Universal Intelligence, and Stephenson’s 33 Principles. But how often do we stop and ask where those ideas originated—or what philosophical traditions may have influenced the early development of chiropractic? That question became the catalyst for Dr. Vic Naumov’s newest book, Innate & the Ancients. In this episode of The Mindful Experiment, Dr. Vic Manzo sits down with Dr. Vic Naumov for a deep conversation about chiropractic philosophy, vitalism, the history surrounding the 33 Principles, and the ancient philosophical traditions Naumov believes may have influenced chiropractic’s early thinkers. Naumov explains that his goal in writing the book was not simply to repeat the definitions chiropractors already know, but to explore the history behind them and ask what was happening intellectually and culturally before Stephenson's Chiropractic Textbook was published in 1927. Dr. Naumov shares his perspective on the possible influences of Hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, Theosophy, Freemasonry, and other esoteric traditions on early chiropractic philosophy. Importantly, he does not claim there was one definitive source. Instead, he presents these traditions as overlapping influences and invites chiropractors and students to examine the history for themselves. Dr. Vic and Dr. Naumov also explore a larger question: What changes when a chiropractor truly understands the philosophy behind what they do?They discuss intention, presence, adaptability, the relationship between practitioner and patient, the importance of chiropractors taking care of their own physical and mental state, and why philosophy can provide a deeper “why” behind clinical practice. Dr. Naumov argues that a chiropractor’s congruence, relationships, presence, and intention are inseparable from the way they show up in practice. The conversation also ventures into symbolism surrounding the number 33, the spine, ancient traditions, vitalism, and the idea that understanding the past can help chiropractors think differently about the future of their profession. Dr. Naumov is clear throughout the conversation that these historical and esoteric connections represent his interpretation and an invitation to question and explore—not established historical fact. Toward the end of the conversation, Dr. Naumov explains that his purpose is ultimately to get people to think. His goal with Innate & the Ancients is to organize information, present another perspective on chiropractic’s philosophical history, and allow readers to decide what resonates with them.
