What happens when you know what is true for you, but living from that truth may disappoint someone you love?
In this episode of The Healing You Method, my co-host Gail Donohue and I explore why knowing your truth does not automatically make it easy to act on it—especially in relationships where belonging has depended on accommodating, over-explaining, or setting yourself aside.
We talk about the difference between disappointing someone and harming them, and why guilt does not always mean you have acted against your values. Sometimes guilt arises because you are interrupting an old, familiar pattern.
We also explore the difference between selfishness, self-abandonment, and self-inclusion: selfishness says only my needs matter; self-abandonment says only your needs matter; and self-inclusion says your needs matter, and mine do too.
Together, we consider how "pre-hearsing" a boundary can help prepare your nervous system for a difficult conversation, what to do when someone pushes back, and why another person's disappointment—while real—does not have to become punishment, coercion, or self-erasure.
If this conversation supported you, subscribe to The Healing You Method for future episodes.
