E018 — No House, No Time: The Rehab Discharge Panic

Caring for an aging parent is not exactly a relaxing hobby.

There are doctor appointments, rehab, discharge planning, wheelchairs, home health, medical equipment, finding a safe place to live—and approximately 47 things nobody thought to mention until you desperately need to know them.

Welcome to The Wicked Daughter, a caregiver podcast for people who love their aging parents… but occasionally need to walk into another room and swear.

This isn't a podcast where I pretend I have caregiving figured out. I don't.

I'm figuring it out as I go, one phone call, paperwork disaster, medical mystery, and “Are you kidding me?” moment at a time.

In this episode, Mom's rehab finally gave me something I desperately needed: a tentative discharge date.

Great.

Except I had a LOT to do before Mom could come home.

Suddenly, “I'll deal with that later” wasn't a strategy anymore.

It was time to actually get moving.

In this episode, I take you inside the rehab care conference, where I started getting a much clearer picture of what Mom could do, what she needed help with, and what bringing her home would actually require.

And then there was the small matter of finding a house, getting it approved, making it safe, furnishing it, moving two households, arranging equipment, and figuring out transportation.

Because apparently bringing your parent home is not as simple as… bringing your parent home.

If you're caring for an aging parent, preparing for a parent to come home from rehabilitation, navigating discharge planning, or just wondering how the hell everyone else seems to know what they're doing—you're in the right place.

This is real-life caregiving.

The exhausting parts.
The ridiculous parts.
The moments that make you laugh because the alternative is screaming.

No experts. No perfect answers. No inspirational music swelling in the background.

Just one daughter trying to figure this whole caregiving thing out without completely losing her mind.

And apparently, what I needed wasn't another plan.

I was officially out of time.
